Jelly #7 (casual coworking) was held at the brand new Pro Office Suites, located at 480 Forest Ave – Locust Valley, NY.   Although the location was a little outside the wheelhouse of our previous events, we had a very good turnout and were even pleased to welcome some new faces to the community.

Unlike past Jelly’s, we were actually joined for the day by a few residents of the space that hosted us. The mixing of the Jelly community with the permanent residents of the space not only introduced some new folks to the Jelly concept, but also gave us Jelly folks a good understanding of what Pro Suites offers its residents.

I must say, having visited several other executive suite centers where residents pretty much keep to themselves, Pro Office Suites definitely offers much more of a collaborative and community oriented vibe.

If you’re a Long Island solopreneur, start-up, freelancer or small business owner and want to work alongside other passionate folks “fighting the fight”, our next Jelly might be just what the doctor ordered.

It’s safe to say that last Thurday’s Jelly at the Continuity Center  in Woodbury was our most successful to date. Not only did we welcome several new and interesting folks to our community, but we also received some very good suggestions regarding how to improve the experience.

One such idea came from Jules Strachman, Business Development Manager at Karma411.com (an awesome site worth checking out). Jules suggested that during each Jelly we give one company an opportunity to demo its product/service at a scheduled time during day. Jelly participants will know the time of the demo in advance and can choose whether or not they want to attend and possibly offer a fellow Long Island entrepreneur valuable feedback and insight.

Radio Interview Overview
On October 6th, a few of the Jelly organizers (David Gise and Dixie Comeau) along with a regular Jelly participant, Cesar Garcia of Mayoria Global, Inc., were featured on Tim Healy’s radio show, The Profit Express (88.7 WRHU). From the moment we met Tim outside the studio he quickly put us all at ease as he explained how the whole process would work.

For a few of us, this was going to be our first time on live radio so understandably we were a tad nervous.

As the show began, Tim gave a very good overview of the Jelly concept followed by a brief bio on each one of us.  Once he got through these pleasantries it was time to move onto (gulp) us. I must say, if any of us sounded a little nervous, it was me, and that quickly dissipated after my first few responses. Tim’s conversational interview style made us all forget that we were talking into a microphone, rather more like we were having a very cool intimate discussion amongst the four of us.

Overall we received very postive feedback from those who listened to the show. The consensus (aside from the fact that I was too far away from the microphone) was that the interview gave a very good overview of what a Jelly is, the benefits of attending a Jelly (thanks to Cesar), some interesting things that happened at previous Jelly’s and a little insight into our future plans.

Unfortunately the studio could only accommodate 3 interview subjects at a time. In the future we will surely be replaced by the other Jelly organizers Randi Busse, Jason Reis and Michael Watt plus some additional Jelly attendees. It will be interesting to do a follow up interview several months down the road and see how things have progressed from this first interview.

Long Island Coworking (Jelly #4) – Chance Favors The Connected Mind

On the heels of our 4th Jelly, I came across 2 excellent videos posted by Alex Hillman of IndyHall that do a great job explaining why environments like coworking spaces and coworking communities are such powerful engines for true innovation. Both videos are from the research of Steven Johnson, author of the upcoming book Where Good Ideas Come From – The Natural History of Innovation.

As per Alex of Indyhall: It’s not about any one individual “idea” or moment, or even incentivizing collaboration, but instead about creating opportunities for smaller, half-baked ideas to bump into each other and serendipitously realize that they are each others’ missing pieces.

I am quite confident that most folks attending yesterday’s Jelly would concur with Alex’s summary of Steven Johnson’s research. It was quite amazing to sit back and watch both the like-minded and not so like-minded people bang around ideas throughout the day. More than once I overheard an appreciative “thank you” for helping someone with a possible idea/solution to an issue they were having trouble getting past.

With each subsequent Jelly, lessons have been learned and changes have been made to improve the overall experience as well as the potential for “accelerated serendipity”. Our last Jelly’s challenge of creating an environment to maximize the potential for free flowing interaction was definitely met by configuring the layout of the room in a more open, scattered layout. This led to much more interaction without being too distracting to people trying to get work done.

The lesson we learned this week: Make sure to post an agenda prior to our next Jelly that clearly describes the schedule of the day.

Lessons From Jelly#3 – How The Layout Of The Space Dictates “The Vibe”

One of the initial triggers that led to the blog post, Why are there no Coworking Spaces In Long Island?, and eventually into our growing bi-weekly Jelly event, was the book Emergence – The Story of the Centre for Social Innovation.

Having read all three books now, one of the concepts I found most fascinating (especially after yesterday) came from Part 2 – Rigour.
The most important thing to remember is that you are not just creating a physical space – you are creating a social, environmental, and psychological space too. Each of these elements deserves careful and deliberate “curating“ to achieve the vision and goals you have set.

Heres Why.

Yesterday’s Jelly was held at the Citibank Conference/Breakout Room, generously donated by Citibank and RXR Realty. As I’ve probably said a hundred times already, “the space was awesome!” We had a huge U-shaped conference table, a big area with couches, private bathrooms and more…the perfect space to aspire to when we are ready to move to a permanent space.

Anyway, as yesterday’s event went on, I was not the only one to realize that the vibe was not quite as energetic as the previous Jelly. While I heard from several folks they were able to get a lot of work done during the day, something was a little off. I even heard the word “library” thrown around a couple of times.

Around 3:30 PM, several of us in attendance gathered outside the work area to discuss the days event, and how we could improve things for Jelly #4.

Larry Reiter, President at EcoEnergy Consulting and Supply Corp, wins the prize for the most insightful post-event feedback. He noted that u-shaped configuration/formal layout of the work area was the culprit for not encouraging as much interaction as there could have been. After thinking about the layout of the room in our previous Jelly, Larry was 100% right.

In our previous location, we made a concerted effort to randomize how the tables were laid out. As a result, people felt much more comfortable walking around the room and interacting with others in attendance. The U-shaped conference configuration tended to limit the interaction in the workspace to only those who were seated right next to each other. Larry’s point was highlighted further during lunchtime where several of the attendees sat together at a rectangular cafeteria table and the conversation flowed much more readily.

While we easily could have adjusted the layout mid-stream yesterday, I am kind of glad we didn’t as it taught us an important lesson about how much the space dictates the overall vibe of the room.

On the positive side, some of the other issues we had during our first two events were non-factors, and most importantly, we added several interesting and passionate members to our growing Long Island Jelly community.
